Hanging in INIT after kernel completes

Hi,

I am trying to build an embedded system with the VIA C3 EPIA 5000 motherboard using the latest 2.4.28 kernel. I have been sucessful at building the kernel and booting it (with GRUB) but the system hangs in the INIT process (after the Kernel hands over). I have looked through the INIT (SysVInit Ver 2.84) source and it appears to hang between the entry point where the CTRL-ALT-DEL funcutinality is set (CTRL-ALT-DEL works) and the point where the first INIT: Ver... booting message is logged to the console. I can see that the INIT process is running (from CTRL-ScrollLock) but no messgaes are printed to the console. The only functions being called where it can be hanging are console_init and console_open but can't be sure. I think it is having a problem writing to /dev/console but don't know how to debug this. I don't think it is hardware problem becuase I can boot RedHat 9 (older kernel 2.4.20-8) from another partiion on the same hard disk. Any thoughts on what I can try next? Would appreciate any hints.

Jugy
