Hang up the System!

Hi,

It's so easy to crash the system:

1. ) Put an unnecessary harddisk with hdparm into sleeping mode (in this case its my windoof hdd)

2.) do a simple "fdisk -l"

3.) Your system hangs, nothing does work then anymore.
No network services etc....

only the kernel responds to the "magic - keys".

Its a RedHat system with kernel 2.4.20.

How can i solve this problem?
