Grub Splashscreen Will Not Show

I downloaded and installed grub 0.94-i686 and created a menu.lst file that reads:

default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Slackware Linux 9.1
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 ro vga=773

title Slacktest Linux 9.1
root (hd0,4)
kernel (hd0,4)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 ro vga=773

title Microsoft Windows 2000
rootnoverify (hd0,1)
chainloader +1

Everything works but the splashscreen does not show. The splashscreen should be correctly formatted because it worked under Fedora Core 1. Would anybody know how to make the splashscreen show? I'm also positive that it exists:

/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
bash: /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz: cannot execute binary file

How about adding splash=silent or =native or -verbose to the parameters instead of splashimage=

Patch

It seems this feature was discontinued. Fedora included it, but now one must patch the grub source. See http://ruslug.rutgers.edu/~mcgrof/grub-images/ for more information.
