Grub Rescue commands

Hello; I'm looking for a concise listing of Grub Rescue commands. Any help? In particular, I'd like to know whether there's a command for listing which (hd0) entry corresponds to which partition.

Try Section 13 and 14 of the Grub Manual at the link below.

(hd0) isn't a partition; it's a hard drive. (hd0,1) would indicate the first partition on that hard drive. On systems with more than one hard drive, the way grub2 designates which hard drive is (hd0) is usually(but not always) determined by the boot priority order. The hard drive with the first position for hard drive boot priority is usually given the designation (hd0). That hard drive may or may not be designated sda when you boot into linux and may be given different designations on different linux distros.

Here's a shorthand guide for booting from grub's command line that you may find useful:

Thanks, kilgoretrout. I'm running a laptop, so it's safe to say that there's only one hard drive. Recently my Windows partition (the one with the boot flag) was somehow corrupted. I ordered a recovery disk (disc?), but being able to fix the error and preserve my dual-boot system would be preferable.

If you can reinstall windows with the recovery disk without destroying your Mint installation, the procedure I would recommend is as follows:

1. Download Super Grub2 Disk here: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/categor...2-disk-stable/ ;
2. Detailed instructions for using this boot disk are here: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/ ;
3. Get your windows recovery disk and reinstall windows;
4. After your windows installation, grub will be overwritten by the windows bootloader and you will not be able to boot into linux. Use your Super Grub2 Disk to boot into your linux Mint installation using the instructions in the above links;
5. Once you've booted into linux Mint, open a terminal and run:
Code:
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
That should restore grub and, on reboot, you should see your old grub boot selection menu.
