I’m a newbie and a complete novice so apologies in advance. I had Ubuntu 6.10 “Breezy Badger” installed behind a Windows XP system. I decided that I would uninstall Ubuntu off machine 1 to reload onto a machine 2 and reinstall Windows on machine 1 only. So stupidly I formatted (in windows) the Linux disks back to NTFS to hopefull then extend my windows C drive into the newly formatted Ubuntu disks. This was not smart. Anyway so now I get a grub loader Error 17 when I reboot. Is this a case of re-install Ubuntu back next to Windows and uninstall Ubuntu properly through Ubuntu itself? Please help I have nothing now and am a little worried about how much trouble I’ve given myself!

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum. I did search for this error but without any luck on specific answers.

GRUB error 17 is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB. GRUB doesn't recognize your NTFS partition and is trying to boot it. You need to boot from your Windows CD or recovery disk and reinstall the Windows boot loader to the MBR.

I think the Windows command is "fixmbr" without the quotes.
