Hi,
i have this problem: windows installation erased linux boot sector, when i go to rescue mode [using suse 9.2] and run grub-install /dev/hda i get this error message: dev/root/ not find or not block device; there is really no root file/dir in /dev; can anybody help me please???

When you are in rescue-mode (using the first CD from the install) you should get an offer for an automatic repair of your installation. Try this one, it works usually quite well...

Umm, that's not what I meant. Boot from the first install CD, it will detect your installation on hard-disk and (if I remember allright) offer three options how to procceed (at least in SuSE 9.0 it does). Play with these options untilyou get the offer I mentioned above (sorry, I'm not at a Linux box right now, so I can't be more specific).
when i boot from suse dvd it gives these options:
1]Boot from harddisk
2]Installation
3]Installation ACPI disabled
4]Installation safe settings
5]Manual installation
6]Rescue system
7]Memory test

Okay, now I remember. Click on 5) manual installation and proceed until you come to the page, where you are offered a repair (until there, nothing should be written to your disk, so it isn't dangerous).
