grub error 22 while installing gentoo

I have been trying to install gentoo on my computer. Everything went great until the reboot, when it said "grub loading stage 1.5...please wait....Error 22". I'm not sure what error 22 is but I believe it involves the grub.conf file; I was not sure what I was really doing, and probably messed that part up.

I tried to fix it, and came up with various errors but came back to error 22. Also, one time, the GRUB menu showed up with strange white vertical lines all over the screen. Booting gentoo showed an error, but the lines obscured the number and all else written. Windows XP booted fine.

I am ot a noob to linux, as I have been running xubuntu for a long time, but am a noob to grub, because xubuntu did it automatically. I can type out the gconf file if it is necessary. A lot of things could be wrong, from just a typo to the kernel being missing (I could not find it in the /ef folder.

Thanks ahead.

Did you run grub-install after creating your grub.conf in your /boot directory? Also, could you post your grub.conf file.

Here is my grub.conf. It is a mess now, it started as a copy of the gentoo install guide example:
will not copy in

edit: whoops, ill put it in here:

Quote:
default 0

#How many seconds to wait befor default is booted
timeout 25

#Put splash image here
#for graphics card splash
splashimage=(hd0,4)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

#windows XP dualboot
title=Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

# For booting GNU/Linux
title GNU/Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /usr/src/linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r13/vmlinux root=/dev/hda4
#initrd /initrd.img
my Linux partition is hda4 and XP (fat32) is hda1. 3 is swap and there is no hda2.
