I am going to be installing gentoo onto an alpha server which does not support boot from CD, what is my best option to get the installation progress started?

Make a boot floppy containing a linux kernel. I'm pretty sure Gentoo provides one. Read the Gentoo Handbook Installation Instructions. They're pretty detailed and they'll have something about creating Gentoo boot floppies.

Is it an SRM or ARCs console Alpha machine? The most common ways to boot Linux installations on Alphas are as follows:

-- For SRM console systems: boot dqa0 -flags 0 from the console

-- Or use Milo (precompiled images) to boot the CD.

I suggest you print the Gentoo Alpha installation manual before you start going about your business. The manual covers pretty much everything you need to know.
