Unhappy FTP problem

I am trying to install PGP on my remote redhat Linux box.

As I am new to Linux I prefer to upload the files by FTP.
So I download the rpm.tar file onto my win xp hard drive.
All OK.

Then I upload the rpm.tar file to my linux box using FTP_pro

When I try to install the RPM file it tells me that the file is corrupt.

I repeat - the error message is the same.

QUESTION 1 - Is it possible to download a binary file onto a windows xp disk and then upload it to a unix disk - or is this not
permitted? Does the fact that it has been stored on a windows xp formatted disk corrupt it.

OK I don't know the anwser so I open my other computer with redhat9 graphic interface installed and browse to the download web page. I click on the link and nothing happens. I try mozilla and Konquerer, nothing happens.

QUESTION2 - Is it impossible to use a browser to download a file with a linux browser? (with IE in windows it IS possible)

In the end I use gFTP to download the file.

QUESTION3-
What is the best way to download a file from a remote site onto my server which is also a remote site?
I suppose the best way would be to do it directly. But how??

Regards
John

1. Are you referring to an XP formatted disk as in floppy or hard drive?

2. Well, not sure what your doing but you should be able to download using Mozilla or any browser while in Linux, I do it all the time. Have you tried to right click and save target as, etc?

3. If none of the above work, have you tried wget? man wget for the man pages on usage.

I am referring to an XP hard-disk. I used sftp mode and the file was transfered in binary.

Yes, you are right. Thank you. In mozilla it does not seem to be possible. But with Konqueror with a right clic there are a lot of options. "Save as" works fine.

Thanks very much for your help.
