Exclamation free space disappeared

My root partition is approximately 40 GB.But when I select all the files(including the hidden files) and check out for the space used up,it shows just 20 GB or so.
Even the df command shows 100 % usage. The df-i shows just 1% usage.

I am sure the space occupied should not be more than 20 GB, because I know all the stuff I hae and they dont take up more than 20 GB.

Plz help
