if you are using lilo as boot loader-----------
when system startup and shows the linux splash image of lilo
press ctrl-x , it will prompt 'boot : '
type 'linux single'
system will boot in single user mode
ypu will get root prompt without asking password , from where you can change the password of root by executing 'passwd; command
if you are using grub boot loader-------
select linux in OS menu from grub screen and press 'e'
it will open edit window, then choose kernel image and again press 'e' and append the words 'linux single ' and press 'b'
system will boot in single user mode , then you can change the password of root as previous steps

Or, put in any live disc that'll run a distro off the CD, mount your hard drive, chroot into it, and then run the passwd command...

Ramish, unless lilo uses password protection and doesn't allow you to enter kernel options, the advice given by ritesh_aladdin is the best. Booting into single mode, you are root already.
Your paths are correct and you don't have to chroot to where your root directory is normally mounted. This is correct to begin with, and booting into single mode is a lot faster.
