well, i decided to download the 2.6.13.2 kernel patch from kernel.org and upgrade from 2.6.13.1, so i downloaded the patch, bunzipped it to /usr/src/linux, and did a "patch -p1 < patch-2.6.13.2" and it comes back with some crazy stuff like hunk #1 failed at 1! and wanted some input or something, but i didnt understand the question so i ctrl+c'd out of it. after trying it a few more times the command issues without error, but i dont think it really worked right.
i followed directions off of a site i found by searching kernel patch howto google. the directions were for official kernel patches from kernel.org according to the site. also, how was i supposed to get that readme if i only downloaded the patch?
You have that README if you have the source for any Linux kernel on your box...
Edit: I forgot to tell you where, though. In Slackware /usr/src/linux-2.4.31/README.
You might have to search, but the kernel source on a default install of a Linux OS
should be somewhere under /usr/src/
