I searched the board and also on Google for an answer to my question, but didn't find anything "on point". I'm very new to Linux in general, so please bear with me. I'm running RH9 2.4.20-8, and mostly having no problems except I'm getting a FAIL for Finding Module Dependencies during boot; it boots successfully into X as root, and there isn't anything obviously wrong with how it runs. However, when I run modprobe \* I get the following message:
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/speedstep.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/speedstep.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/speedstep.o failed
Does this have anything to do with the failure message, and what is speedstep.o, and what do I need to do to correct this?? If you need further documentation please let me know. TIA for any help!
Distribution: PCLinuxOS 0.93 and 0.92, Vector sometimes

Rep:
speedstep.o looks like a cpu throttling application.
According to IBM - "This package provides Intel(R) SpeedStep(TM) Technology Applet II. SpeedStep is a mobile technology that allows an enabled CPU to operate
in multiple performance states."
Are we talking a Laptop here? If this module can't be loaded, it's probably because the kernel doesn't support your particular cpu, I would think.
I would suggest ignoring the message, but if you want to get rid of it, all you need to do is stop RH from trying to initialise the module speedstep.o I have stopped messing with Red Hat, so I don't know offhand how to do that. Essentially, you need to find your equivalent of /etc/modules.conf and remove anything relating to speedstep.o Or maybe RH handles it via a different start-up script.

No mine isn't a laptop...I came across a couple of posts in a Google search regarding speedstep.o pertaining to laptops, and as I recall they had to do with processor identification, but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone more knowledgeable had a clue about it. Things seem to be working fine as far as I can tell, so I suppose I'll do as you suggest and ignore it. Thanks for the help!
