Filesystem/RAID Performance Tuning/Optimization

I should already know this, but I don't. I am currently setting up a 400gb device (hardware raid 5 with scsi disks). My stripe size is set at 256k. I am using ext3 for my filesystem. My block size is 4096, my bytes per inode is set to 256k. The filesystem will contain no more then 200, 2gb files.

I am currently experiencing high await times (obtained via iostat -x -d) of 500 - 3000. How/what should I do to remedy the situation and increase throughput? Also general documentation on filesystem tuning specifically for performance (different situations, geared towards reads/writes/both with large/small files) would be appreciated, however a solution for the current problem has a much higher priority.

I've got exactly the same problem. How did you manage it?
