file system error

hi,

every time i power on my machine and boot to linux..i get this message

ERROR:file system with errors
do fsck w/o -a or -p option

i have to do

filesystem 1#fsck /

then so many questions ...inode doesn't match, fix it?<y>

and so on...
it takes some 10-15 minutes for fsck to complete...
what might be the problem ,should i reinstall the system...
how can i correct this file system error...is it a problem with harddrive?

BTB every time i shutdown ,i use poweroff/halt to do this... (clean shutdown)

bye ,
anoop

make sure your data is backed up. it could be your drive is going bad.

I just had a drive crash on me last week. lost a bit of work there.

If your drive gets worse and you are losing sectors ( or more sectors ) you can use dd_rescue to copy the information from the old drive sector by sector, while ignoring bad sectors.

http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/

I was advised that if my drive was going bad ( which it was ) fdisk might do more harm than good as it gets confused, so be careful.

good luck.
