Hi,

Do a 'tar -xf filename.tar.tar' and see what happens to the file. If it ends up being called 'filename.tar', do 'tar -xf filename.tar'.

Chances are it is just a tar file that has been named .tar.tar

You could also use file-roller. Its a front end for managing archives.
