external hard drive mounting and system hang during load
Hey, I have a couple of questions.
First let me mention that i'm running SuSE 9.1 for clarification. I'm having a couple of difficulties. My external harddrive (sda1) is set up in fstab to mount as /media/sda1. Generally, it has no problems if I manually mount it either in the terminal or using the device section in Konqueror, but every once in awile I get strange errors. Sometimes it says that I cannot read/write to it because is a protocol device. Sometimes it will not mount at all and just hangs until I close the terminal or gui window, and I have to reboot and try again to get it to mount. Also, I have it set to automount since I always use it and have it turned on, but on startup it tells me that sda1 is not a valid block device. It is formatted with reiser, and I have my fstab set up to auto mount, to have read/write capabilities as user, and to execute binaries. So I'm really not seeing what the problem is.
On a seperate note, my system seems to enjoy hanging whenever I turn my computer on. It will usually do so the first time I try to boot, and then after resetting it boots all the way. Most of the time it locks up while loading the canna Kanji server, which I realize I really don't need on my system, but if I remove it, it just finds somewhere else to lock up during my initial boot. There isn't a particular part it gets stuck on every time, so I really don't know what to do about it. Also, when shutting down my system, it usually hangs while unmounting my swap partition. Any ideas on that?
Hopefully someone has some sort of idea what is going on here. I'm going to throw in my fstab file, because maybe i'm just blatently missing something.
/dev/md0 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/md1 /boot reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/md2 swap swap pri=42 0 0
/dev/sda1 /media/sda1 reiserfs auto,user,rw,exec 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec,iocharset=utf8
/dev/dvdrecorder /media/dvdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec,iocharset=utf8
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,exec,sync
Oh, and I should also mention have I have reverted to the conventional mounting methods and am not using submount, subfs, or hotplug, as you can see in the fstab. Just in case anyone was wondering =] Thanks.
