Environment vars

I'm trying to set the JAVA_HOME env variable for good on my system. Is there a certain file that is executed each time the box is booted? If not, is there a way I can make the system run a file upon boot?

either
1.export JAVA_HOME
or
2.add an entry to your .bashrc adding an entry of JAVA_HOME
keep posted

I've been doing step one, but it doesn't keep after a reboot. I'll try number 2 and post back.
