Enable cursor using startx?

I'm using startx to run a program without logging into a session first, how do I enable the cursor?

startx /usr/bin/gmplayer

you should have some sort of cursor!
if not, you can use xsetroot do define one:

startx /usr/bin/gmplayer & xsetroot ...

man xsetroot
and fill in the dots.
