empty files named "1" owned by root ???

I see all kinds of files on my system owned by root named "1" just the number 1. All the '1' files are empty files, any ideas whats going on?

Was going to say someone has been doing :wq1 instead of :wq! when exiting a file but with the empty files I'm not sure...

that is bizarre... What directories are you finding these in?

it seems that they are all the directories where i am automatically backing up data from via tar & gzip :

/home/kkempter/.mozilla/1
/home/kkempter/GnuCash/1
/home/kkempter/Data/1

although there are others :
/usr/lib/GConf/1
/usr/share/terminfo/1
/usr/include/gconf/1
/etc/gconf/1
