Question emacs without x windows

I ssh to a server from my linux machine and edit programs that reside on server. Uptill now I use pico and I want to use emacs. However, emacs always opens in X windows which is kind of nice but not what I want...Is there a way to avoid xemacs opening in x windows and just staying simple and text/keboard based.

thanks,
