Elegantly moving a large directory.

I have a directory titled "music" that contains about 30GB worth of data and I was wondering what the most elegant way to move this folder to another computer would be.

I thought maybe I could tar or zip the folder up and then transfer the zipped file via ftp. Would that be very efficient?

I like the tar command section located here for that.

there is no way to "elegantly" move files. Just copying would be faster than tarring and copying.
