easy (?) cd audio problem

it seems that some permissions got messed up, and my media players no longer see any audio tracks in my cd drive unless i'm root. i just discovered it's a permission problem, so i'm starting a new thread. i tried chowning /mnt/cdrom, /dev/cdrom, /dev/hdc, and chmodding various things including /dev/snd, but nothing i try is working. how do i get this to work as user?

Have you tried
> chmod 666 /dev/cdrom
(as root) which is the advice given by
> workbone -a
?
