dual booting

On my motherboard, an Asus p5kpl, I have an IDE connection with Win XP installed and also a Sata Drive which is empty. I wish to install Ubuntu 9.04 on the Sata Drive. What are the steps specifically I need to take to ensure that on boot up both Win Xp and Ubuntu show up. The difficultity I have is at partition time. Is the mount point root (/), boot, media/ hda!. A step by step guide would be most appreciated.

I would suggest you use your Installation CD (Ubuntu) and run the command: sudo fdisk -l, this will give you partition information so you know how Ubuntu sees your hard drive(s) and you don't install Ubuntu over windows.

The most common set up is to use root (/) as the mount point for your installation. Various ways of doing it and various reasons for these ways. I think if you search here at LQ "dual boot ubuntu/xp" you will find numerous posts explaining the process. There are also a large number of detailed how-to's for exactly this scenario which you can find with google.
