Dual Boot off Two HDDs

Hiyas,

Here's what I would like to do:

Have 2 drives in my system, one with Linux installed on it, one with Windows installed on it. I would like LILO (or GRUB preferably) to let me select which OS I would like from the menu as it does with a dual boot off a single drive...can I:
  • Install Linux on HDD1
  • Unplug HDD1 and install Windows on HDD2
  • Edit grub.conf or LILOs equivalent to include the windows system

I would have the Linux drive as my first boot device and then it would load LILO/GRUB and I could select the OS I would like....

Is this possible?
Thanks
Shak

Grub will very well. Actually, whether you use Grub or Lilo, your configuration will be simpler if you put Windoze on the primary hard drive. It'll work either way, it's just simpler.

yeah it's a tiny bit simpler but it's less conceptually secure. Linux on master is MUCH more preferable imho. makes removal much much easier.

You need to edit /etc/lilo.conf, have a look at the lilo docs for some examples and remember to always run lilo after making changes to lilo.conf.

Grub's config file is menu.lst ("ell", "ess", "tee") in /boot/grub.

Correct, NOT grub.conf. Sometimes the ."lst", displays as if it were ".1st" on some people's displays. Just wanted to head off a possible problem. Obviously didn't !!

Windows 98 on another drive

I have a situation where I have 2 hdds on 1 computer, and Red Hat Linux 7.2 (GRUB) has designated (1st)
drive as the 'DOS' drive. (If i don't press 'up' arrow when I turn the computer on it automatically boots 'DOS',
but it says to ' insert Dos disk and press any key') I have used other versions of Linux, but am unfamiliar with
partitioning, at least for other OSs. What I would like is to do a Fresh Install of Win98, using it as a' second'
OS, mostly for games. How do I use GRUB? I understand from studying the siotuation that I need GRUB
and something called GNU Parted. Is anyone out there familiar with {what I'm saying?} I would appreciate
input from anyone familiar with partitioning for Linux/Windows!
THANKS!

Um, nothing. It's just that Grub uses the data in menu.lst to actually display the boot choices and to execute the commands to access what you choose .

Well, I use Grub for my 2 scsi hardrive setup with win98 in one and RH7.2 on the other and I always edit the grub.conf and it works beautifully, I don't know what the problem you say there is would even matter since it works fine by grub.conf
