Does linux logs internet activity or downloads

Hello, linux fans!

I am using slackware 10.2

Some or most websites we visit download junk to
our computers such as spyware/adware cookies,
viruses and such without us knowing about it.

Does linux have a logging system that tracks
unwanted downloads to our computers. I appreciate
your commnets.

Thanks

DV

Are you saying that you have had software installed on your Linux system while just surfing? Pleas explain. Which browser? Which website? etc.

I've never had any such problem using Linux. I use Firefox 1.5.0.5 and I have checked the box here:
Edit -> Preferences -> Content -> "Warn me when web sites try to install extensions or themes".

Also, to view or clear or disallow cookies, you can go here:
Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy -> Cookies.

Nothing was done or installed to my linux macjine. I
was just curious if anything does get downloaded to
my linux machine, the syslog would log these
downloads.

OK, I understand the question.

A web site can cause anything to be downloaded to your computer using almost any browser on any platform. But it goes into some cache folder. It can only be a problem if the browser and/or operating system provide the capability to use or install it without the user's explicit permission.

AFAIK, Windows Internet Explorer (IE) is the only platform that does that. That's why security minded people encourage you to not use IE.

Get Firefox!
