Do I need to compile the kernel in this case?

I setup a linux os(FC6) into my laptop, but the wireless card is not working.

And, I have found a website with instruction for enabling the wireless card for my laptop, but i am not quite understand with the instruction.

Is the instruction saying that i need to recompile the kernel to enable the wireless card?

here is the instruction page

That is a very outdated page. It is referring to 2.4 kernels where you have 2.6 kernel tree. From last I seen the hermes modules were always included in the fc kernels. Run this command to list the wireless modules compiled for your kernel.
ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/wireless

Look for hermes.ko file. If present and according to the page you posted you run the command as root.
/sbin/modprobe hermes

To see loaded modules run this command.
/sbin/lsmod

It is possible the card you have is not using the same chipset as to what the page you posted is describing. They can vary from version to version and sometimes within the same version. Run this command and post info related to the nic.
/sbin/lspci -v

Also check the HCL section here on the forum at the top or to the right and see if you card and version is listed.

if not much luck then ndiswrapper with the inf windows driver should work. Lots of post on ndiswrapper and fc distros.

You might be better asking this in the Fedora/Redhat forum.
That referenced page is from a gentoo user - compiling kernels for them is second nature. I would expect FC6 to have all that support - probably as modules. You need to find a kernel config file - probably under /boot. Entry the following when you find the filename
Code:
grep -i hermes /boot/<filename here>
What do you see for CONFIG_PCMCIA_HERMES ???.
