What distribution are you using? Some like Fedora have tools to help with that.
Did you edit the right line in xorg, it would be the line with you default depth.
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "** Intel i810 (generic) [i810]"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultDepth 16
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
You can also decrease your default depth temporarily to get up and running. Then use one of your distros tools to fix it.
If all else fails run as root
and reset the parameters that you want. Change it a few times if you have to until it runs the way you want it to.
Backup your X config file somewhere in case you mess it up so that you can restore it.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Good luck
