Well, firstly rpm is two things; the first is a package format, and the second is a utility for manipulating packages. You can't compare yum to the package format part, so I guess you meant to compare yum to the package installer rather than the format.
As mentioned before, the dependency resolution is the big thing; if the software doesn't resolve dependencies for you, you have to do it yourself, and that can be less than fun. Yum isn't the only program that can do this, either; other distros make other choices (eg, zypper).
