determine load on a linux web server

i want to determine the load on a linux web server so that i can use that information to redirect requests to other servers when that server has reached its optimum level. can anyone help me with this. I know that /proc filesystem's loadavg, meminfo, cpuinfo gives the current stat of the system but how to use those ?has anyone done anything similar to this?

I'd recommend installing and running sar for a while.

As to how to use them: hard to say, load is a multi-
faceted thing. There's CPU, there's memory as a bottle
neck (which brings up swapping), there's serving diverse
pages (disk-I/O wait), ...

Cheers,
Tink
