Unhappy Deleting files does not increase amount of free space?

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and I deleted 10GB of class lectures by deleting the directory they were in. I expected my free space to increase by ~10GB but it remain unchanged!

I performed a hard reboot thinking that would help, but no avail!

Any thoughts?

I've looked at similar threads and I at least don't think I'm having the same problem. I run du and df and it definitely says I have 1.1GB left when I just deleted 10GB worth of files.

Okay, I thought there might be a trash (.Trash) dir but I can't find one.

ls /home/<username>/.Trash returns nada!

I once had the same type of issue, where I removed about 18G of data, and it seemed to take the filesystem about 15 minutes to catch up before reporting the recovered space.

No different to find than searching through Windows "Documents and Settings" directory, which can have data in at least two different directories.
