deleted file from /dev directory


Whoops, i did a boo boo and deleted HDC from the /dev directory and now i cant access my CDRW drive. Is it possible for me to re-create HDC in some way? or will i have to do a re-install ??

You can re-create it with the supplied MAKEDEV script. I dont remember the exact syntax, but if you read the man page or some docs (perhaps look in /usr/doc) you should be able to find the solution. Otherwise, i'm sure someone else will be more helpful than me, and actually tell you how to use MAKEDEV.

You can create it again with:

mknod /dev/hdc b 22 0

that's for the block device with major # 22, minor # 0. Take a look at /usr/src/linuc/Documentation/devices.txt..... This has information on all of the devices abailable in /dev
