Unhappy X fails to start

I am using Debian 3.0r0 with a GeForce4 440mx, I am unable to "startx" due to no devices found. I have downloaded and installed the nvidia drivers, I have used xf86config (the text one) to create the config file but still get the no devices found when "startx"ing. When i run xf86cfg (the graphical one) I get the following error message:

This is rather weird as it is the configure program and should be able to get a very basic graphic session running. I'm sure it works as ive been using it with slackware 8.1 for a while now.

I am wondering why the system is loading all the drivers for so many different cards. I would suggest getting the Nvidia kernel and glx from Nvidia and installing that. Alternatively edit your XF86Config-4 to load the "nv" module.

Iv'e already tried that with no sucess =(
I don't think that it is a configuration problem myself as i carn't even start the graphical config.

You might want to try using the nvidia-kernel-src and nvidia-glx-src deb files. They make things run a lot smoother for Debian. (ie apt-get install nvidia-kernel-src and so on)

But before you do that though, you probably want to do a "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" or manually edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and set the video driver to "nv" for the time being....

btw.... also, when you are done building the nvidia drivers, you want to change the X video driver to nvidia from nv....
