Debian Squeeze can not cd to directory just created from tar ball

Running Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-686) and I am trying to get java installed in my web browsers (firefox and google chrome). I downloaded the tar ball jre-7u9-linux-i586.tar.gz to /home/raygo/Downloads. I then created a directory /home/raygo/java and copied the tar ball there. I then executed the command:

Code:
tar -zxvf jre-7u9-linux-i586.tar.gz
I see all the files being extracted into jrel.7.0_09 and if I do an ls -l I see the directory there.

Code:
raygo@debbie:~/java$ ls -l
total 46928
drwxr-xr-x 6 raygo raygo 4096 Sep 25 00:23 jre1.7.0_09
-rw-r--r-- 1 raygo raygo 47995690 Nov 26 15:19 jre-7u9-linux-i586.tar.gz
When I do anything to that directory it tells me "No such file or directory"

Code:
raygo@debbie:~/java$ cd jrel.7.0_09
bash: cd: jrel.7.0_09: No such file or directory
raygo@debbie:~/java$ ls jrel.7.0_09
ls: cannot access jrel.7.0_09: No such file or directory
I can not even sudo into the directory (or remove it to try again).
Am I missing something? what did I do wrong here?
Any and all help is appreciated.

drwxr-xr-x 6 raygo raygo 4096 Sep 25 00:23 jre1.7.0_09
That's the number 1

Code:
raygo@debbie:~/java$ cd jrel.7.0_09
bash: cd: jrel.7.0_09: No such file or directory
That's a lower case L
