that doesn't look good, but at least hdc is your hard drive.
if you're lucky, if you're lucky, the drive just won't work with
dma enabled.
if
hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc
works, then you can try
fdisk /dev/hdc

if that doesn't work, you're drive may be bad, but you can still
try the dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdc bs=1M count=1
and that will wipe out the first meg of the drive, if it can be written to.

the hdparm command is not permanent and only lasts until you reboot.

You still with this problem??? You must really like messing arround with these stuff. IMHO you should buy another HDD and leave that one as a reminder of 'never to kick the tower again'... :-)

And buy Quantum... :-P

Hello all,
whansard:

root@slackware:/# hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
setting using_dma to 0 (off)
using_dma = 0 (off)
root@slackware:/# fdisk /dev/hdc

Unable to read /dev/hdc

Ciccio:
Yes, . I am always persistent and/or tenacious. Haha. Not about buying stuff when something goes wrong, it's better to know how to fix the problem :P

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Abid Kazmi

you might can download a low level formatter from the website of
the maker of the drive. those tools are really good at diagnosing drives.

Hello Everyone,
I finally got some progress with the HDD. I have some new pics to show (as I can not save the text). Currently, due to FTP problems, I can't upload them. As soon as it gets back up, I will place the url.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Abid Kazmi

Hi all,
Here are the pictures.

In this picture, I typed in fdisk /dev/hda and that was the result. Can not write, heh.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/securehack5/1.JPG

In here, I typed cfdisk and and pressed Y.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/securehack5/2.JPG

I ended up with this. To me it seems like 649MB is most likely the Slackware CD-ROM instead of the HDD. Is this free space on the HDD or is there a misplacement of wires.

Thank you,

i think that's the hard drive, and it's just messed up. i've seen fdisk
in windows and everywhere give crazy numbers for a messed up drive.

The above reply's are very techie (and i am not a techie) , so forgive me if this is really stupid, but I had the same problem as the original poster after I installed my second hard drive. Had not formatted it yet (obviously), had set up the BIOS and all that, but I got the same message

Non-System disk or disk error
replace and strike any key when ready

when i took the machine apart again, I had forgotten to set the master/slave jumpers on the back of the hard drives. When I reset those, i got my C:\ (windows) drive back.

Do you have Windows 2k or XP? I know I musn't say this... but I tried the tool diskpart and it works fine... better than the old (M$) fdisk at least.

You can try partition magic also...

Oh... I just remembered... I had a similar problem with a CD-ROM in Mandrake 9.1

try linking:

ln -s /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/ /dev/hda

or whatever aplies in your case.

Hello all,
gevers:
It's okay. We all are trying to help each other. Once before I also had the same error but not as serious as this. I had simply re-installed Windows on it. In this, the partition (or atleast I think) is messed up. By the way, I believe it wasn't a problem with master and/or slave because the machine was never opened before this problem came up.

Ciccio:
I HAD WinXP on it. I will try the diskpart (something is better than nothing). With the Partition Magic, it would be a DOS ver., if I'm not mistaken?

I tried:

root@slackware:/# ln -s /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/ /dev/hda
ln: /dev/hda : File exists

So I thought I'd check out the others:

root@slackware:/# ln -s /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/ /dev/hdb
ln: /dev/hdb : File exists

and

root@slackware:/# ln -s /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/ /dev/hdc
ln: /dev/hdc : File exists

Heh.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Abid Kazmi
