daily madness... openssh

and the daily madness continues:

i installed openssh from source. it seems to work all right (i'm not getting "connection refused"), but it won't accept any passwords whatsoever. i've changed the passwords with ssh-keygen and with passwd to no avail.

what to do?

ok. found the solution for others' benefit:

it's a pam.d issue. you need to copy some files to /etc/pam.d/sshd. (other web pages kinda told me the wrong info. )
