Daemons are programs/services, like the sshd(aemon) is responable for letting you
connect to your box, the lpd(aemon) is the piece of software you connect to when you want to print something.
They run mostly in the background and are (should be :/) heavily protected as most of
those daemons run on privileged ports (<1024) and that requires root.
