customizing a liveCD

How difficult is it to reshape Knoppix or another liveCD to your standards? Can it be learned easily, or does it require a large amount of time, concentration and patience? Knoppix is my favorite distro, but I wouldn't mind removing the many unneeded programs that show up on its menus.

Holy moly. It looks insanely complicated. But I did see in one of the messages that there is a new super-fast version of Knoppix available (or it will be available). If it's so fast, it should become the standard Knoppix.

I always thought SLAX Live CD was the easiest to customize. The applications are module based images that you can add and remove from the .iso using an editor and re-burning the distro.

Say, wouldn't one be forced to have two CD drives for this, for obvious reasons? You can't burn another CD while running a liveCD. As far as I know. Knoppix would never let me remove the disc while it was running.

Wow...is it true that, as I have been reading, that the current edition of this SLAX distribution is only 186 MB? That would make Knoppix, which takes up nearly 700 MB, look like a kludge.

ya knoppisx is 700mb with 2.4 gb of compressed info.i think some if not all live cd have the option to load to ram at bootup, that will free up the cdrom.

And does loading them into the RAM make them faster or slower? Either way, tell me how...it would be very helpful.

I couldn't use SLAX, though. I no longer have the patience to use a command line, although it would be fun. I'm too stressed out.

All your quest should end up at this distro "PCLinuxOS", based on Mandriva
http://www.pclinuxos.com

Customzining it is as simple as counting 123
1. Install PCLinuxOs, on your hard drive (You have to just click one icon on Desktop)
2. Add/remove whatever you want, just ensure that root partition is under 1.9GB
3. Open a terminal and type
# mklivecd myCustomizedLiveCd.iso

Now burn this freshly baked iso. Viola, its done.
