Connect to network share on knoppix 6

I've been using knoppix 5.1.1 and when I need to connect to a network share, I usually just open up konquer and type smb:\\10.0.0.1\shared and I put the user/pass and it lets me in and everything is good.

On Knoppix 6, however if I try to just connect to a network share in that fashion, it tells me the "Directory doesn't exist!" and all I can do it hit OK. Anybody know how to get around this? I believe I have the CD version of 6.0.1.

I can't even start samba on knoppix 6- /etc/init.d/samba start returns an error. Help?

samba is there, I can edit /etc/samba/smb.conf but I can't restart/start the samba server. grrr.

EDIT: it appears that we have two sides to the problem- benjithegreat98 can't access a network share, I can't make a network share under knoppix.

EDIT EDIT: I worked around the problem using a USB stick- if you wanted your whole HDD that wouldn't be a solution though.
