Compiling applications into the kernel?

Hello there.

I had a thought... as MS apparently compiles IE into the kernel, explaining its lightning fast load up speed (?)... is it possible for us to compile applications into the kernel? What kind of drawbacks would it have if so?

I did a bit of searching, but can't seem to find any information on the subject...

no, not really. and that's not what they do. they have windows load and keep the ie libraries in memory at startup, so it seems a lot faster than it is. in linux it is possible to make some apps stay in memory with tricks, if you wished, but it would be some work.

quite right whansard, the mozilla dev team has included a similar feature, but it is not automatically turned on to my knowledge. to make the mozilla libs persist in memory and get (theoretically) faster load times follow:

Edit -> Preferences, then highlight Advanced and check the box labeled Quick Launch.

this is the path using v. 1.5, not sure about other versions, though i'm sure they are similar at worst.
