Commands to check and change labels of partitions

I need linux commands to check ext4 partitions and to change their label. I found following from the net:
Code:
e2fsck /dev/sda3
For changing label of partitions, I found following command:
Code:
e2label /dev/sda8 "labelname"
Both these seem to be commands for ext2 partitions. Will these commands work for ext4 partitions also? Do I need to umount the partition first for any of these commands? Thanks for your help.

I use gparted which I find very good. But it scans all the partitions and sometimes takes a little while. If above commands are reliable, I can do these tasks quickly from the command line. Usually linux experts like you promote command line rather than full program managers!

man e2label:
e2label will display or change the filesystem label on the ext2, ext3, or ext4 filesystem located on device. you do not need to unmount
