We only know what you tell us, which is why I asked about if you ran the program. Are you running in a VM, or a physical installation? And did you run anything past step 9? Because some cursory research on packettracer not starting indicates missing dependencies/libraries. Have you referenced the documentation?

Are you running in a VM 'no' a pc physical install.
did you run anything past step 9? just step 11 i didn't get any dependencies/libraries missing, or errors so nothing to fix or install. i did install it on a vm Ubuntu 20.04 and did get the missing depends sso i installed them and its working in the vm. but its a pain to use vm for one program. would love to have it on my main machine

Have you referenced the documentation couldn't find any linux install documentation and i don't know how to find a list of the required dependencies fairly new to linux

when i type packettracer it says starting packettracer then quits back to the command prompt

There are several troubleshooting guides, and if you have NO documentation for this program, how are you going to use it?
https://community.cisco.com/t5/routi...x/td-p/4645578

Also just saw you're using Mint 19...that's a few versions old, considering the latest is 21, which may explain why it works on Ubuntu 20 (different dependencies/packages, and SLIGHTLY newer). Have you tried version 8 of packettracer, instead of 8.2? And if you have an account on Cisco Netcad, you also have the documentation available.
