Unhappy Cinelerra discussion

Where can I find a more detailed tutorials about Cinelerra? I just want to find out how to make a video using still photos... So far the tutorials that I have explains about video editing.. I am using still images to create a presentation..

So far I managed to import all images in the project... but I put them on different tracks... Is there a more efficient way to work because when I put the images in different tracks, It slows down my machine and my boss is under the impression that you can edit all the images in one track...

This is quite frustrating... I need help... If anyone do have a solutions to this pls reply this post
All help is greatly appreciated....
Thank you

I am struggling to get Cinelerra to work in Slackware 10.2 (still a newbie), but I have worked on one or two NLEs. Try to put all images on one track, one image next to another.

cinelerra is no good at making a movie from still images. Honestly, nothing on linux is really very good at that.

you may find information to do this with cinelerra (it can do it, but not well) and you may hear people recommend 'stop motion', the open-source project (a half-functional application from code that has not been revised in over a year), but neither of those will do what you need.

sorry this is a disappointing area of linux development.

Cinelerra discussion

I think I'm getting better at using cinelerra a bit although I still have a lot more to learn about it.. I found that to put all the images on one track is possible but you need to make sure you have keyframes keyed on both ends of a single image before inserting another image.. So far I managed to minimize the usage of tracks for each image...

Take note : If you want to use "Dissolve", you need to have two images on the same track in order for the transition to work.

If I discover anything else I'll post it...

I've managed to make a video using still photos on cinelerra but it has so many limitations. This programs is probably good with video but with still images it's quite complicated. I need to explore more but I would disagree that it is impossible to use this programs to make a video using still images....

I suggest Jahshaka: http://www.jahshaka.org/ or the propriety Sony Vegas: http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/pro...egasfamily.asp (I don't know if it will work on WINE).

here's how you make a video using still images in cinelerra. before I begin this mini-howto, let me explain that on my system, when I try to use the reframe video-effect(for speeding up and slowing down), cinelerra completely exits. I filed a bug report, but until there is a fix, frame rate will have to be controlled by individual frames.

  1. first got to settings > preferences
    • - choose the 'recording' interface from the menu
    • - go to the 'images' section at the bottom and put a check next to 'import images with a duration...'
    • - the number that you put in the field here determines how much time each still image will be assigned
    • - - for me, 0.0950 seems to work really well
    • - - you can play with this setting later once you've gone through the steps and have everything figured out
  2. load your images
    • - go to file > load files
    • - - in the window that appears, navigate to the directory where your images are kept
    • - - select the first image
    • - - hold on shift and select the last image and every image in between will be highlighted as well
    • - - choose 'concatenate to existing tracks' (just to get in the habit of it, it works the same as insert*)
  3. make cinelerra match its output and viewing areas to the size of your images
    • - go to the resource window
    • - select the media folder
    • - - highlight all of your images
    • - - right-click on one of them and a menu will appear
    • - - choose 'match project size'
    • - - - be careful here, if your images are larger than 2046 in any dimension, mplayer will not play the output
    • - - - to manually choose the dimensions, got to settings > format, and enter in the desired height/width
  4. you can change the speed of an image by moving the mouse to the side of a frame, clicking, and dragging along the time-bar. I don't want to write about that now (and you'll probably rather use the video filter anyway)
  5. render
    • - go to file > render
    • - every option and field here must be addressed, or your render won't complete
    • - in the 'select file to render' it is important to put the correct extension after the filename (.ogg, .mov, .mpeg, etc)
    • - I'll use /home/duck/test_render.mov (because theora is a little too taxing for my system, a slow celeron)
    • - In the file format, I choose quicktime for linux (if you chose mpeg, use mpeg video | if you chose a .ogg extension, use theora for the file format)
    • - de-select audio (you can add sound to the animation later)
    • - make sure video is selected
    • - click on the wrench next to video
    • - - whatever it is that you choose here, this will determine the quality of your render, so raise the settings as cinelerra's default settings are a little weak sauce
    • - deselect 'create new file at label'
    • - for insert strategy, choose 'insert nothing'
    • - click on the check and render your video
- you can import your video once it is rendered, and it is much easier to find information on video editing, so I'll end the how-to here. If you have a question, you should ask here and you should get an irc client (like irssi) and go to #cinelerra, where you can ask the devs to hold your hand and walk you through some stuff (they did it for me)

also, I admit that I was wrong about cinelerra. It isn't well documented, so it was hard figuring out how to do this, but once you know how to do it - it is wuick, easy, and it makes sense. Hopefully I can install cinelerra on another system in order to use the reframe video-editing tool.

satox I hope that worked for you. I forgot to mention that in the preferences window, I put a check next to 'show each frames' or something like that.. I don't know if that's important, but yeah.
