Question cdrecord: able to write successfully to CDRW, but not CDR media

Hello,

I have a very strange problem while burning CDs after I upgraded from
kernel 2.6.8 to 2.6.12 on debian testing. I am able to burn data on my
CDRW media, but not to any CDR media. I have tried CDR media from
different sets (purchased at different times), as well as 2 totally
different brands.

Actually, I am able to burn successfully to my CDRs - cdrecord runs
without any error and completes the burning process. But I am unable
to mount the CDRs successfully. I have tried multiple times with my
CDRW media, and everything works fine, though.

I get the following error when I try to mount CDRs burnt with cdrecord:

% dmesg

hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x34 { AbortedCommand
LastFailedSense=0x03 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 64
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=hdc, iso_blknum=16, block=16

% mount

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Below are verbose output from cdrecord when I tried to burn the discs. Like I mentioned, they don't give errors.

With CDRW media (able to successfully mount it):

if someone can help me out with this.

Thank you in advance,

Try burning the cdr at a low speed. I also have a cdrom device which doesn't do cdr. So, I just gave up and use the other device for cdr. I can do cdrw on both devices and that is for diffferent distros. Someday, I'll toss that device and get a different one.

First, I wouldn't specify the device as /dev/hdc, I'd use the dev=1,0,0 notation.
Your output shows:
"scsidev: '/dev/hdc'
devname: '/dev/hdc'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
Warning: Open by 'devname' is unintentional and not supported."

Also, give the following a try:
# cdrecord -v dev=2,2,2 -pad pad=63s speed=8 -dao /path/to/iso/file.iso

I learned that on the excellent article:
http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/coasterless.htm

After the burn, even though you cant' mount it, what's the output of:
# isoinfo -d -i /dev/hdc

Hope this helps.

Today, I again checked the drive on an older kernel (2.4), and on a windows 2000 installation. Same problem. I'm able to burn to a cdrw, but not to any of my cdrs. It must merely have been an unlucky coincidence that my drive failed right when I upgraded my kernel.

Ah, and yes, I have tried various speeds as well (2, 4, 8, 16, etc.). Still no luck .

I'm going to have to dump my drive and get a new one, I guess.

Thank you,
VJ

I tried the dev=n,n,n notation, but it doesn't work. But dev=ATAPI:n,n,n works. Still the same problem, though .

FYI, same problem when I use -dao and -pad padsize=n. And, the command

% isoinfo -d -i /dev/hdc

produces,

Code:
isoinfo: Input/output error. Read error on old image
I am now quite sure my drive is dying and needs to be replaced.

Thanks a lot,
VJ
