CD Writing w/ Debian / more drivers required?

Hello. I recently installed Debian on my laptop here, a Fujitsu P-2040 subcompact. Previously on it i had Slackware.

My problem is for whatever reason, I am unable to get the ide-scsi emulation to work.

First thing I did was of course append hdc=ide-scsi to lilo, when it didn't work i searched around for a solution.

Yesterday I downloaded the 2.4.19 kernel and patched it a bunch with patches specific to my distro, and started out with a .config from this site: http://www4.ncsu.edu/~tscoffe2/Fujitsu/. The .config was for 2.4.18 but i figured it wouldn't be that much of a difference and "make old config" found the new stuff and all. (also note that the p-2040 and p-2046 are essentially the same, the 46 just has built in 802.11b)

Anyway, then i found this site: http://www.geocities.com/robm351/lifebook/

In the CD-RW section of that page is a few options to pass to the kernel, which I did. I think the only option that was not selected was the "enable vendor specific..." thing.

After compiling and reboot i discovered i can't mount cd's anymore, period.

i symlinked /dev/sd0 to /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd as well. When issuing a mount command I get this:

g0atbook:goatleg2 ~ 0>mount /mnt/cdrom/
mount: /dev/sr0 is not a valid block device

same thing when as root, so i tried mounting it as hdc again:

g0atbook:/home/goatleg2# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom/
mount: /dev/hdc is not a valid block device

Again, no dice. I rebooted without "hdc=ide-scsi" and was able to mount cd-roms with hdc fine.

So i rebooted again, again with "hdc=ide-scsi"

checked dmesg,

first case where hdc is mentioned:
hdc: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2102, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
(note, yes, it's a combo dvd/cd-rw)

After attempting to mount /dev/sr0 for the first time after boot this appears in dmesg:

SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00

And after trying to mount each time appears:

hdc: driver not present

hrm... how about running cdrecord -scanbus as root?
Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root

Doh...

So anyway, I'm thinknig this is a driver problem, i KNOW this cd-rw works, becuase it functioned properally under slackware before.

What packages/modules/drivers/etc does Debian need to enable ide-scsi and burn/write cds?

This really has me stumped!

(also note that i never used a debian kernel source code package, if that helps)
