cannot startx after failed glibc intallation through RPM

Ok, here is the story:

I was trying to install a new version of xine on my Mandrake 9.0 with
GNOME2 and I needed to intall glibc3.0.1 I downloaded the RPM for
mandrake from rpmfind.net and tryied to install it. It kinda hung up
the system but I was able to recover it by using a virtual console and
kill.

I restarted the system and the next time It wouldn't start my X server
and the xfs service cannot be found by service.

runlevel returns that I'm un runlevel5 so that's not the problem but
when I log in with my root (I haven't tried anyone else) it returns
the following:

-bash: id: comand not found
-bash: uname: command not foud
-bash: uname: command not found
-bash: tty: command not found
-bash: tty: command not found
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: id: command not found
-bash: [: too many arguments

when I try startx it returns:

/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: line 1: uname: command not found

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno2)
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to conect to X
server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

now... I managed to install xfs and even to start it.,...but startx
keeps returning the same errors. I think Maybe there is a problem with
the shell (bash)... but I don't know.

I'd appreciate ANY help or piece of advice you guys can give (anything
that doesn't include buying a new PC :-P)

thanks a lot.

Ciccio.-

get glibc from source and install it, or else get it off of the mandrake cds from rpm then if you still cant do startx reinstall xfree

im not sure but i think you have to be in single user mode for glibc either way it wont hurt so do that with "telinit 1"

well. I've solved most problems by doing un 'update' from teh CD and re-installing everything without fgormatting nor losing any config....

the problem is still the X.

it returns:

[root@Gandalf root]#startx

execve failes for /etc/X11/X (errno2)
giving up.
xinit: No such File or Directory (errno2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno3): Server Error
[root@Gandalf root]#

any idea what this means???? thanks a lot
