Cannot change permissions as root???

Ive tried to change permissions to access my external HD as root, but everytime I try to save the modifications, it says "unable to change permissions" or something like that. If I cant change them as root, then how am I supposed to change them???

You have to specify the perms when you mount that drive. Changing the perms of the mountpoint doesn't change the perms of the mount.

Next time you mount the drive - put the following at the end:
Code:
-o umask=0000
See if that helps.

you should also note that FAT file systems do not have file permissions.

so maybe your external drive is formatted with this windows file system.......

mount it fdisk -l
