Can I connect a busted Winxp laptop to my vector linux desktop?

I have an older pc desktop running vector standard 6.0 and My girlfriend has a Samsung laptop running windows xp for about 3 years now without so much as an oil change and it's refusing to boot even in safe mode and the windows xp disk won't even load up although all of my linux live cd's work.
I was wondering if it's at all possible to connect to my desktop via usb maybe as a mass storage device to back up music, videos, photos and whatever documents she needs before I wipe the hdd and reinstall?
any help is appreciated.

You could boot the old Windows computer up with a livecd such as Knoppix , and then mount the NTFS drive and store the data on an external USB hard-drive or USB memory stick.
