root can do whatever they want, period.
I used to run as root all of the time, thinking that I was smart enough to not make a mistake. (BTW, it only took me about a month to realize how much of a mistake that was, especially as a new user.) The biggest thing is when you dont even know you made a mistake, for example, today I was trying to change the root password in a terminal. I thought I typed the command perfectly, but I didnt, and the root login got messed up and I had to reinstall. (Fortunately it was a fresh install anyways and I was just tinkering with a new setup). I have been using Linux for years now, and am still capable of making a mistake. Making a mistake as root can be severe.
