Howdy Partner,
i am trying to switch to my other Kernel in Slackware but i can't find the files to do it. I am dualbooting so I boot up from my first Harddrive if i want to run Win2k Pro, to run Slack i boot with a floppy boot disk. I am running the 2.2.19 kernel now and i want to switch to run 2.4.5 kernel. I can't find the lilo.conf file to do so. If someone could help that would be great.
As long as you installed he 2.4.5 package the kernel source will be in /usr/src/linux-2.4.5, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't come compiled so you'll have to compile it yourself. Also lilo.conf is in your /etc/lilo.conf and lilo processes are in /sbin/lilo and /sbin/liloconfig.
So i have to compile 2.4.5..............hmmmmm
dam..more reading, i don't have the lilo.config in /etc. That was one of my problems but i will check out the processes. Thanks
sorry its /etc/lilo.conf not lilo.config. And as for compiling the new kernel, it's a bitch the first time, but after that it's pretty easy. Theres also been tons of questions here about kernel compilation and probally answers to any begginner compilation questions you could have.
Yeah i knew what you meant(/etc/lilo.config), i don't see it though anything that resembles it or whatever. I boot from a floppy too. I run Win2k and Slack. I looked in the boot disk mounted it and everything, but it wouldn't let me look in it. i know there is stuff there, it shows it has files but it just won't load. Oh well, i will check into compiling that Kernel. Thanks for the help.
Slack 8 has 2.4.5 as well as 2.2.19 it gives you an option at the start of the install. If you don't have anything imporant then re-installing with the 2.4.5 kernel might be easier than changing from 2.2.x to 2.4.x. The image to boot for a 2.4.5 install is "bare245.i".
I recommend going to www.gnu.org/software/grub and getting grub. It is a very easy to setup boot loader that works well with linux and windows 2k. I use it on my Slackware 8 install. Beats Floppy booting hands down.
Hey Polar dude,
thanks for the tip, but exactly how did you go about setting it up? right now i boot linux from my installation cd.....Hey it works and then i need to reinstall Win2k. Trying to put lilo in the masterboot area. When i try to boot from the harddisk i just get a repeating output that looks kind of like this 01010010101010010101010101010101001010100101010101001
that is all it does, so i need to reinstall windows i guess. Later
